*M/S Excel Tools for Quality Documentation and Analysis. Part II: Data Formatting and Conditioning*. by Dave Brown
M/S Excel is an almost universally used as a tool for recording, assessing and communicating quality information. Using some of the power tools within Excel, simple spreadsheets can be transformed into highly professional presentations and generalized tools for repeated use and greatly improved efficiency.
In this second of a series of presentations on power tools within Excel we’ll focus on data entry and presentation methods that transform one-off tasks to highly useful data management tools.
This series will conclude with methods for managing and querying date, and using VBA to create powerful tools beyond those within Excel for solving a wide range of problems.
Later in the year we’ll return to design of experiments and ANOVA, to discuss further applications of these methods.

He has been in the quality profession for over 25 years. He is the author of the major reference book on this subject – Product Liability Prevention: A Strategic Guide. He is a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality and Chair of the Product Safety and Liability Prevention Interest Group.
Product Liability Prevention - How a Good Quality Management System Can Limit Lawsuits
A major new field of focus for the quality profession is product liability prevention with benefits that rival any area of total quality improvement, taking the overall quality program and effort to entirely new levels.
Current efforts at quality assurance focus on providing a product that is reliable and meets customer expectations, and that it is made right the first time. In addition to quality and reliability, liability is a new frontier. Manufacturers need to understand quality from a legal standpoint.
Most product liability incidents are based on user negligence or a lack of understanding about how a product works. The cost of product liability, though, is high. For every $100 football helmet purchased, $55 goes to product liability premiums. 80% of the cost of a heart valve is to cover the cost of liability insurance. One way to minimize costs of product liability is to prepare to deal with the legal system should the need arise.
In this age of ever increasing litigation, it is essential that manufacturers learn the key elements of product liability prevention and incorporate such efforts into the company's quality systems and procedures. When a manufacturer goes to trial in a product liability case, it must be able to prove not only that its product is safe and reliable by design, but also that every reasonable effort was made to ensure its safety and reliability during development and production. The highest rated types of programs are those designed around the guidelines of ISO 9000 or similar quality management standards. A comprehensive program will feature process and procedure documentation, as well as systems audits and verification, but is not as likely to cover elements associated with product liability. Taking the program to this next dimension requires additional elements, including policy statements, design reviews, product safety team reviews, reliability testing, and records retention. A well-run quality program that includes a quality steering committee with a goal of creating continuous improvement in products and corporate profitability will effectively help limit exposure to potential lawsuits.
A new perspective is needed in product liability prevention -- one that goes beyond the traditional focus on design engineering, product design, and risk analysis. The new focus also must deal with accident investigation and reporting; customer agreements and contracts; document control; litigation management; marketing and advertising; recall procedures; records retention; reliability testing; supplier selection; warning labels; and warranties. Proper coverage of all these issues requires specialized training, an in-house champion and expert, and strong support from top management. A corporate liability team also is needed to learn about the field and to train all other employees in product liability prevention awareness. The in-house product liability expert should investigate alleged incidents and be prepared to manage litigation. All these strategies can improve cost control by reducing corporate loses and insurance premiums.
